The Superintendent of Banks of Panama, Milton Ayón Wong, joined the 1st LatAm Economic Forum, organized by the Bank of Spain, held on May 8 and 9 in Roda de Bará, Tarragona, Spain.
The high-level forum brought together monetary authorities, financial supervisors, representatives of multilateral organizations, and academics from various regions of the world. During this official mission, the Superintendent was accompanied by Kathy de Guardia, Director of International Projects and Affairs of the SBP.
Held under the theme “Capital Flows, Exchange Rates, and Geopolitics,” the forum convened governors and deputy governors from 20 central banks with the aim of fostering dialogue and generating proposals on the main economic and financial challenges facing Latin America in the current international environment.
The event featured the participation of Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, and Agustín Carstens, former General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements, while the opening remarks were delivered by José Luis Escrivá, Governor of the Bank of Spain.
As part of this agenda, the Superintendent also participated in meetings organized by the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies (CEMLA for its Spanish acronym), where discussions focused on regional matters of interest, including progress and challenges related to cross-border payments and monetary cooperation in Latin America.
He also held bilateral meetings with representatives of Spanish banks, with the support of His Excellency Héctor Infante, Ambassador of Panama to Spain, who took part in the meetings.
The participation of the Superintendency of Banks of Panama in these international forums and high-level meetings forms part of its strategy to strengthen international cooperation, promote best supervisory practices, and further position Panama’s banking system in key global discussion platforms.
