As part of the cooperation agreement signed between the Judicial Branch and the Superintendency of Banks of Panama (SBP), an Update Workshop on the New Code of Civil Procedure was held on Wednesday, March 11, at the SBP headquarters.
The event provided SBP attorneys—who play a technical and legal key role in the institution’s supervisory, regulatory, and institutional defense functions—with the opportunity to update their knowledge following the entry into force of the new Code of Civil Procedure. This legal framework represents a structural transformation in the conception and processing of judicial proceedings, incorporating principles such as orality, immediacy, concentration, and procedural efficiency.
The event was attended by Superintendent of Banks Milton Ayón Wong and SBP General Secretary Kuldip Singh. Also present were Chief Justice of the Supreme Court María Cristina Chen and Justices Olmedo Arrocha, Janeth Torres, Carlos Pizarro, Juan Francisco Castillo, Velkis Saavedra, Carlos Villalobos, and Miriam Cheng Rosas.
During the opening remarks, Superintendent Ayón highlighted the importance of training as a means of promoting the alignment of criteria between the judicial function and the State’s regulatory activity.
“Strengthening the procedural skills of our attorneys is essential to ensure sound, consistent actions aligned with the new regulatory framework governing civil procedure in Panama,” he stated.
Justice Arrocha described the event as “productive” and thanked participants for their interest in staying up to date on civil law matters.
The academic program addressed topics such as the transformation of Panama’s civil procedure system, the main reforms introduced, the ordinary proceedings, judicial communications, preliminary and final hearings, precautionary measures, and the mechanisms for challenging judicial decisions.
