The Superintendency of Banks of Panama (SBP) inaugurated the IX Awareness Conference, “Reframing Prevention: Regulatory Changes and Emerging Trends,” an event dedicated to professional development, analysis, and the exchange of experiences to strengthen financial crime prevention and risk management across the financial system.
In his opening remarks, Superintendent of Banks Milton Ayón Wong highlighted how technological advances, financial innovation, the digitalization of services, and the increasing sophistication of criminal organizations pose new challenges to safeguarding the integrity of the financial system.
“Reframing prevention means continually rethinking our approaches, strengthening our methodologies, and preparing to address rapidly evolving scenarios,” Ayón stated.
The Superintendent emphasized that effective prevention requires the joint commitment of authorities, boards of directors, senior management, compliance, audit and risk management departments, and all employees of supervised institutions.
He also acknowledged the work of compliance and financial crime prevention professionals, whose efforts constitute a fundamental line of defense in protecting institutions and contributing to the strength of Panama’s financial system.
The conference addressed topics of particular relevance, including regulatory changes, emerging trends in money laundering and terrorist financing, and challenges associated with new technologies. National and international speakers contributed their expertise to the discussions.
The conference reaffirms the SBP’s commitment to risk-based supervision aligned with international standards and focused on strengthening the effectiveness of financial crime prevention systems.
